Geisha & Maiko
You will occasionally see Maiko and Geisha (called Geiko in Kyoto) in the Gion area of downtown Kyoto city. If you would like to take a photo of them, never shove a camera in their face and start snapping. It is considered rude and you will never see Japanese people do this. Please ask, as some Maiko and Geiko do not mind if you photograph them. However, if they are with their Okaa-san (their often much older female master), expect a firm and polite no.
