Bicycles
There are more bicycles in circulation in Japan than people at any given time and that is amazing since there are about 126,000,000 people. That is not taking into account the new bicycles in storage that are manufactured and imported each year. As a result, there is more of a problem with bicycle parking in Japanese cities than with car parking. Bicycles are the best way of getting around the greater area of metropolitan Kyoto. Kyoto City provides bicycle parking, just look for it, and it is very reasonably priced. If you park your bicycle illegally, you may find it taken by the local council and you will have to pay about ¥2,500 to get it back. If you don’t get it back, it will be sold and exported as a second hand bicycle to North Korea or a South East Asian country.
