Cars, Bicycles & Pedestrians
Here are a few simple rules to follow in Kyoto and in any other part of Japan. Cars give way to bicycles and pedestrians as prescribed by law, similar to most other countries. Bicycles are by law, allowed to ride on the footpaths, unless otherwise signed, and must give way to pedestrians at all times. If you are cycling and collide with a pedestrian on the sidewalk, expect the police to be involved, it’s the price you pay; and for hitting a pedestrian, you will pay! Pedestrians have right of way on the sidewalk and at prescribed crossings and designated traffic lights. J-walking is not tolerated, so you may get a caution from the police if you are caught. If you are apologetic, you will possibly get a caution and not a deserved fine. Be thankful.
