Public Transportation

Kyoto has reasonably good transportation systems. Kyoto Railway Station also has a Shinkansen Station to get you to other major cities outside of Kyoto prefecture, and in the same station, you can get to nearby towns and cities with the Shinkaisoku (High speed express)and local trains.

The bus system has a very comprehensive coverage of the city and outskirts. There are also various subway systems that are very useful for tourists to get around and see almost everything with an ensuing short walk.

Taxis, Taxis, Taxis! Never have there been so many of them in one city! A person can get a taxi at almost anytime and anywhere in Kyoto to go to any place. Taxi drivers in Kyoto are very honest and polite, and you will seldom be over charged or be taken the “long way around the short way” (the scenic tour) to get to where you want to go.

Also, when you get invited to private or public functions, they usually start at 6pm and are finished promptly by 8:30pm. This is so people who rely on public transport have enough time to get home because the last bus is usually at 10:30pm and the last train is at about 11:30pm. If you leave your departure a little late and you have to transfer to a connecting line, you may be left stranded. If you don’t like long walks, you will have to pay for a taxi.
