Appearances
Apart from your dress, facial appearance is also an important factor. You will notice that people in Kyoto can be very different in appearance from tourists. First, you will notice that Kyoto people basically have standard black hair with auburn dyed hair coming in a strong second. There are no people who have orange, green or any other color of the rainbow colored hair, not in main stream society anyway. Men are nearly always clean shaven, and it is somewhat surprising to see anyone with facial hair. Women have an acceptable amount of make-up, and rarely will you see a “dolled up” Hollywood face in a crowd. Piercings and tattoos publicly displayed are tolerated, but some people will shy away or avoid you, so don’t expect many invites. As you are entitled to your freedoms, you will find that people are also politely entitled to their opinions.
