Neat presentable dress is advisable to set good first impressions. Kyoto is a conservative but very fashionable and trendy city, and they love their brand name fashion labels. European tourists have similar dress codes, so this speaks to the many tourists from English speaking countries. Comfortable fitting casual clothes and footwear make for good sense. If you are going to attend meetings, functions or dinners on a more formal note, then a tie and suit are mandatory.
