What To Wear
To set a good example, wear some fashionable clothes when coming to Kyoto, and leave the wore out t-shirts, tank tops, low neck tops, bikini tops, shabby jeans, mini-skirts and thongs at home. Good dress sense will nearly always get you in the door of most clubs and bars, so first impressions are important.
Summer.
Light wear. Japanese people usually don’t wear short pants, but nice jeans or trousers. Short sleeve tops with collars and sandals are acceptable. T-shirt, shorts and thongs are definitely the wrong look! Don’t forget to bring your sunglasses because the sun is very bright and the glare will give you a headache; and bring a face-towel or handkerchief to wipe away your perspiration.
Autumn & Spring.
Medium wear such as long sleeve shirts, jeans or trousers, a light jacket, and neat presentable footwear. Remember, foot wear is not worn past the doorway of a house, or sometimes past the front entrance of commercial premises. Always wash your feet and change to a fresh pair of socks religiously every day.
Winter.
Think warm! A thick thermal jacket, long coat and warm trousers are necessary items. A must are gloves, a warm beanie or knitted cap, a scarf, warm socks, and warm non-slip footwear. If you forget these, you will be one unhappy freezing or frozen person. Don’t forget to bring your slipper for indoors because your feet will freeze walking barefoot. If you are going to the north to see the snow on a sunny day, those sunglasses are a must for the glare.
