Chopsticks
A person once asked me if Japanese have converted to cutlery or whether they were still using wooden sticks. I replied that primates have been taught to use cutlery, but they have not learnt to use chopsticks. Anyone can use cutlery, but if you learn to use chopsticks, you will gain a sense of satisfaction and respect.
A spoon and fork are nothing more than glorified junk food shovels and pitch forks that leave your brain no time to register that your stomach is full. With chopsticks, you eat bite size food at a slower pace, and Japanese people eat until they are about 80% full (it’s called “hara hachi bunme”), topped off with a few cups of green tea. When you walk around Kyoto, you will hardly ever see overweight or obese people. What you eat is just as important as how you eat and with what you eat it with, chop sticks. Another important lesson to be learnt!
