Money, Cards, Banks

The currency in Japan is the ¥ yen. Credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are readily accepted by major retailers with other cards being a hit and miss experience. Japanese do not use checks (or cheques) and therefore they are not accepted in Japan except for traveler’s checks which are only accepted at banks. Currency exchange services are offered by nearly all banks, and bank hours are between 9am and 3pm. Cash withdrawal from ATMs are usually available for Cirrus, Plus, American Express, Master Card and Visa card holders. ATMs are located everywhere, banks, convenient store, railway stations, post offices and shopping centers.
